As soon as you're familiar with how Euro-nymphing works you quickly reach the zone of "diminishing returns". Takahashi-san's course assumes you have the basic idea of nymphing - and introduces simple, game-changing details to keep your performance curve going upwards!

  • In 16 illustrated text lessons (and onstream video) Takahashi-san, with interpretation and commentary from World Youth Gold-medal winning Uberto Calligarich teaches some of the "small hinges that swing big doors" in long-rod/light line nymphing
  • And yes, it is absolutely true that triple-figure successes with these exact techniques prompted a "10-fish Catch & Release Limit" on this busy fishery to re-level the playing field (please use these lessons responsibly)
  • PLUS bonuses that take you inside the personal fly box of Shin Takahashi - and the surprising, disarmingly simple, patterns he uses to such great effect

Quick-view Highlights

40 minute On-stream Video Training

Putting his money where his mouth is in the presence of 20 students and following other anglers up a busy section of river - Takahashi san takes multiple fish right in the footprints of the previous fisherman. Filmed "guerilla style" - exactly as it happened including live commentary from Uberto Calligarich

16-lesson Illustrated Course

Expanding on and reinforcing the concepts shown in Takahashi-san's coaching demonstration - the illustrated lessons also allow extra interpretation based on time spent with Takahashi san and the Q&A sessions we personally benefited from

Shockingly Simple Fly Patterns

Takahashi san's "Confidence Flies" are matched to particular presentation roles - and they produce results you can hardly believe because you'd look straight past most of them in any other angler's fly box. The one exception is probably his modified "ayu" fly...

Appreciating the tactics and philosophies that form the foundation of fishing for both key figures in this course will help you re-evaluate the course lessons as well as your own approaches to angling. Personal interviews recorded for "Tenkara in Focus" are included along with the instructional course lessons to give that perspective.

Tenkara Nymphing with Shin Takahashi
Key Teaching Points:

  1. 1
The right sequence of fly changes that will give you the most information about the fish AND minimize your chances of spooking fish before they have had chance to eat your fly
  2. 2
WHY that sequence works – and how it relates to our other lessons on fly manipulations
  3. 3
A simple - but so often overlooked - aspect of the classic “Semenai tokuro” or “Sao-nuke” ideas that highlight the benefits of finding fish that have not been targeted by previous anglers
  4. 4
The importance of the correct “contact” with your fly (a light, almost imperceptible tension between your rod tip and fly)
  5. 5
A vital habit at the end of each drift (that you also find in formal competition nymph fishing) where a “just in case” hook-set is used to check if a fish has grabbed hold of your fly without giving any indication on the line
  6. 6
Special hook-set technique used by Takahashi-san to minimise fly losses, reduce fish-spooked and also increase the proportion of successful hook-ups with fish
  7. 7
How to start to be a “fishing detective” and use the way that fish respond to your deliberate changes in tactics to work out what those fish are doing

Doesn't time on the water beat everything?

QUALITY time on the water is the key. Is it a bad idea to turn up already armed with tried & tested tactics (refined by generations of talented anglers)? To me that seems like a good way to make the most of precious fishing time.

Is my purchase protected?

We only want you to be a satisfied customer - so if for whatever reason you find that the course isn't for you - just email me (Paul) on paul@fishingdiscoveries.com for a prompt and polite refund of your full purchase amount.

In exactly what formats are my course materials supplied?

The course is taught entirely online. You gain access to your own exclusive website "members' area" which contains video, text and static images that explain the tactics and show them in use in real fishing situations. For the video content, we also provide the opportunity to download each video as an offline "MP4" file for viewing offline.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who wants to get more out of either fixed line nymphing or add the skills listed in the 7 Key Teaching points above onto their existing Euro-nymphing with fly rod and reel

Is this Japanese "Tenkara"?

These techniques use fixed line rods and came out of Takahashi-san's blending of his background in Japanese tenkara with his interests in European competition methods. Therefore, fixed line nymphing is probably a good description of this school of fishing.
